ABSTRACT: THE FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS OF NAPOLEONIC ITALY

In the 1800-1815 period, Napoleon Bonaparte’s policy of unifying the administrations of conquered territories with that of France had two aims: first, more efficient tax collecting, and second, more efficient conscription. Oddly enough, these changes prefigured in a certain way the creation of the European internal market. This article attempts to show this by analysing the history of taxation legislation in Italy and the institutions which managed that taxation, both at local and central level.
