Este é um estudo de síntese acerca do sistema defensivo conhecido como Linhas de Torres Vedras, construído ao norte de Lisboa durante a Guerra Peninsular, entre as tradicionalmente chamadas segunda e terceira invasões francesas de Portugal. O estudo organiza-se em quatro partes: (1) a planificação do sistema defensivo por Arthur Wellesley, apoiado nos estudos do engenheiro português José Maria das Neves Costa, os quais sofreriam algumas modificações relacionadas com a sua implantação no terreno; (2) a construção das Linhas utilizando mão de obra militar e, maioritariamente, civil, incluindo um grande número de mulheres e crianças; (3) a sua utilização pelas tropas aliadas, evidenciando a sua inexpugnabilidade; (4) o seu financiamento com a ‘ajuda britânica’.

This is a synthesis study about the defensive system known as Lines of Torres Vedras, built north of Lisbon during the Peninsular War, between the traditionally called second and third French invasions of Portugal. The study is organized in four parts: (1) the planning of the defensive system by Arthur Wellesley, supported by the studies of the Portuguese engineer José Maria das Neves Costa, which would undergo some modifications related to its implantation in the field; (2) the construction of the Lines using military and, mostly, civilian labor, including a large number of women and children; (3) its use by Allied troops, demonstrating its impregnability; (4) its funding with 'British aid'.
