Nice to see the updated Action on the Côa, June 2018
There is no substitute for actually walking and viewing the area. However, Tomkinson provides a very useful contemporary perspective.
“June 25th We march at daylight, passing the Coā (sic) at the bridge of Almeida. The banks are the most rugged and inaccessible I ever saw: a handful of men might defend the bridge against any force.” p. 24. His account of the actual combat though would appear to be second-hand unlike the vast majority of the journal: pp 33-34 and there is a very useful map facing p. 32 facsimile of the original in his diary.
My version: The Diary of a Cavalry Officer 1809 – 1815, Lieut. Col. William Tomkinson, reprint of second edition (1895), Frederick Muller, (1971)
