French brigands and the impious brood of atheists

'This knobbly [walking stick] dating from the early 19th century is clearly the work of a virtuoso wood carver. It commemorates the battle of Verona, fought between the Habsburg Austrian army and Napoleon’s French forces on March 26, 1799. The unknown maker’s long and cryptic Latin inscription explains all, ending in typical style: “For the support of old age – which French brigands and the impious brood of atheists and Jacobins produced – I have made this stick and carved it enigmatically”....It features on the handle a monkey in the guise of Napoleon, who was frequently caricatured as the ape, or the Emperor’s man-on-the-ground, General Scherer.'
