"By examining French opinion on the Egyptian campaign, which lasted from 1798 to 1801, the intentions of the French government and Parisian elites become apparent. Their perceived claim on Egypt was a persistent and motivating belief that gave way to a new concept of self in Egypt. More than just a product of modernization, downtown Cairo reflects the continuing domination of French culture after its initial introduction to Egypt during the Egyptian Campaign. I argue in this paper that the modernization of Cairo in the nineteenth century is an example of the continued colonization of Egypt by the French government and Parisian elite after their political and military exit in 1801."
