ABSTRACT

During the Peninsular War a number of military units were raised by both sides. Civic Militias were one of the most characteristic forces in the Napoleonic army in Spain. They were designed as an aid instrument to public order, being established in Malaga in 1810 following the experience of Seville. Their development and their organization were marked by difficult interactions both with the civilian and the military authorities of the city. A feature element in the Malaga militia was their military organization as a full regiment, instead of the battalions raised in Seville and other Andalusian cities.
