Re: Talleyrand
In Response To: Talleyrand ()

Dear Richard,

Two 'snippets' about Talleyrand that might interest you. Back when I wrote "Crisis in the Danube" my friend, David Chandler, read the book and the first thing he said to me was, "I did not know that Talleyrand had so thoroughly betrayed Napoleon." Thereafter, I pursued my interest in Talleyrand and concur with the advice you have been receiving about biographies. But my special next interest was Napoleon's rise to power and I wrote about Talleyrand again in my Marengo book. Here he comes across as a supreme opportunist. I did not expect to encounter him again when I turned to my latest subject, Poland 1806-1807, for "Crisis in the Snows" but there he is: summoned against his will to far-away Warsaw where, as related in my book, he behaves very shabbily, literally putting a scented cloth on his nose while he follows orders and 'bestows' medals on deserving French soldiers. What a guy! James Arnold
