I've enjoyed the period engineer manausls that I've collected as well. The variations required when working with different period explosives are very interesting - and then adding in the factor of whether you're objective is made of stone or wood. I agree that most of the bridges, especially in the Peninsula, were of stone - and probably likewise across most of western and central Europe.
