Yes, judging targets from the cavalry's behaviour would certainly make sense. I guess in terms of working out lines of sight, we would need to establish where the French batteries were positioned: I must confess, I do not have any sources with decent enough maps of the battlefield to know the answer to that - perhaps someone else could help?
