the young (priest) student Mastai-Ferretti (later pope Pius IX) in 1812 had to voyage from Rome till Bologna in order to obtain the exemption from military duties (he was conscripted in the ranks the "Guardia d'onore del Regno d'ltalia" - Honor Guard of the Kingdom of Italy) and kept the civil status claiming to be unfit as epileptic.
In 1815 he asked to be admitted in the ranks of the renewed "Guardia nobile pontificia" (it was not a personal choice, but his oncle, a priest, suggested him to do so in order to gain some benefits for his career as clergyman) . Actually his request was rejected because he continued to have epileptic crisis.
