Thanks Digby. So they were glass containers filled with gunpowder and ignited by hand. Would the containers have been specially manufactured or were they just bottles, do you think? The author who mentions them (Suchet) seems to suggest that they were unpleasant and a bit, well, underhand. Were they extensively used in the period?
