One problem with many uninformed views of the Continental System is a failure to separate the Continental System from Napoleon's protective tariffs. They are two distinct entities. The Continental system was undermined by Napoleon's protective tariffs. As François Crouzet points out the Continental System was actually fairly effective when it was actually applied.
