Bernadotte was not engaged in either action. His conduct is abhorrent for a soldier of any country. He was co-located with Davout around Naumburg when the order was received to march with Davout if he was with him. He ignored this and chose instead to march according to his previous orders which took him out of the action and he did not influence the action at Jena either.

His actions were treacherous and dishonorable, and could be counted as cowardly. He was lucky to escape a court-martial. Excusing his conduct has more to do here with not liking Napoleon than anything else...
