As for source material, pretty much all biographical books on Napoleon mention what I have said though they have not stated those exact words, which is my opinion of those events. Though I am still not sure how a military Coup against your government is not disobeying orders

I could have even added Corsica and his machinations in their too if I had wanted too, though the position was very complicated and fluid.
