Also, found this bit, of possible interest:

"This next piece of work was the production of a subscription series of prints which would eventually be published in June 1798 under the title Loyal Volunteers of London and Environs. The Volunteer Companies were militia regiments that had been called into being during the late 1790s in order to supplement Britain’s small and dispersed standing army and counter the threat of an invasion from revolutionary France. Ackermann was an enthusiastic supporter of Britain’s war effort and also hoped to capitalise on the fact that so many Britons were rushing to enlist in the newly raised regiments of Volunteers. He asked Rowlandson to produce one richly coloured plate for each of the companies raised in and around London, showing the correct uniform and demonstrating an exercise from the military drill manual that was then in use (the completed series would eventually consist of 88 plates in total). The project was then opened up to public subscription and received a good response with the King, his sons the Dukes of York and Clarence, the King of Prussia, the Archduke of Austria and the Directors of the Board of the East India Company all joining the list of subscribers. A complete set of the prints was eventually published in book form on 12th August 1799 which had luxurious hand-colouring which was in places rendered using gold and silver leaf."
