"Napoleon in. ordered during bis reign the publication of the correspondence of Napoleon I., as a tribute to his memory. The work was done under the supervision of a committee, presided over by Prince Napoleon, between the years 1858 and 1869. Although the correspondence filled twenty-eight quarto volumes, a very large number of letters and documents remained unpublished, the committee believing they would not add to the reputation of the great emperor. It is from these inedited letters, etc.—the most dangerous portion of Napoleon's correspondence—that Leon Lecestre the editor has made his selection. They cover the time between the years 1800 and 1815."
