9.4. 1796 General Vandamme to the Directory praising Pichegru at length:
"Everywhere he trampled over the enemies of France; his frankness, his intrepid courage, his firmness, his devotion to liberty, his justice, all earned him the confidence, esteem and attachment of all republican soldiers who knew him; his name suffices to inspire new courage in the soldier. Enemy of all intrigue, he dislikes courtiers and flatterers........Pichegru is respected by the foreign princes, his name recalls to the enemies of the Republic the victories against them. All good Frenchmen owe him gratitude; Holland, our ally, owes him her liberty, and the Army of the North, her glory; the Army of the Rhine loves him and fears to lose him."
