Thanks Tom, a useful - albeit selective - review of the relevant Portuguese historiography of the 19th century. The two most often-cited works (of Soriano and Chaby) are referenced and some useful pointers provided as to their continued utility. At the very least, anyone writing about this period and theatre needs to have consulted these two works. The reader, of course, needs to be mindful of political intent and ideological bias - alluded to in the short review of das Neves (a contemporary viewpoint). The contributions of Raul Brandão are omitted given they belong to the early 20th century. Best A
