Thanks Tom, some useful insights and proof, if needed, that Portuguese sources are required reading. It's a shame that the sources are not referenced in full. I have myself reviewed Martinien's lists, which of course were not available to Oman to support his second volume, in relation to this second invasion and they demonstrate beyond doubt French losses resulting from combats and clashes with the Portuguese; both prior to the French seizure of O Porto and subsequent to British involvement.
