I recall the article. I've researched and lectured on the medical aspects of the retreat. Few realise that dysentery was a slightly greater cause of mortality at Portsmouth. Also, Mark Kingdom Brunel, Isambard's father, designed a good shoe for the British soldier after viewing the pathetic state of Moore's returning force. Almost 50% of men's shoes had disintegrated on the retreat. Also, the behaviour and thus the fitness of the small army varied so much between differing units. Lowered morale was a big issue.
