Interestingly Broers quotes (Nicole) Gotteri's biography of the marshall, which obviously draws on this article, for the invasion of Portugal (Spirit of the Age: 1805-1810).
"The Emperors's instructions ... were both insufficient and chimerical. Then tended to turn the expedition into a sort of military promenade following an itinerary bereft of any obstacle."
I would (with respect) probably suggest "were both inadequate and unrealistic"
