Napoleon Series Archive 2017

Re: Behind the Memoir - the publishing story

You cynic!

I hope that, in time, Greig will write some case studies describing the correspondence and other dealings between individual authors (Memoirists) and their publishers, some of the editing that was done to their manuscripts, and perhaps even the extent to which the memoirs of rankers were 'prepared' for publication - in the article she quotes Sgt Donaldson's indignation denial that this Recollections is not his own work.

This overlap between the Peninsular War Memoirs and publishing history combines two particular interests of mine, but I hope I'm right in believing that many contributors to the Napoleon Series would be interested in the back story behind some of the primary sources that illuminate our studies.

And I should add that while Greig relies mostly on the archives of British publishers, she is also interested in French and Spanish memoirs of the Peninsular War, and I hope that there will be more about them in the completed thesis.
