They had to form their new companies while on campaign. It should be noted that with the nine company organization, the grenadier companies in each battalion were smaller than the other eight companies. This did not occur with the new voltigeur companies. The grenadier companies had 3 officers and 80 other ranks; the fusilier/chasseur and voltigeur companies had 3 officers and 120 other ranks. The new organization in 1808 have each company one captain, two lieutenants, one sergeant-major, four sergeants, eight corporals, two drummers, and 121 privates.
