More about stress modelling in the game:
*The base proximity stress is scaled by a few factors.
*When the attacking unit has a good pace ( say charge pace) and a solid cohesion the shock potential of the said unit is naturally higher. This will increase the proximity stress of the adversary.
*Another factor will be the reputation of the attacking unit. Certain units had a storied career, like the Old Guard infantry, the Scottish regiments etc. When these units with a high reputation bonus are attacking, they will impart a higher proximity stress on the adversary.
*So for units that do not necessarily have a high reputation bonus, the best way to attack is to ensure a good pace and to maintain good cohesion until the last moment. Preceding the attacking unit with another battalion in skirmish formation and pausing a bit before the final attack goes in to "reorder the ranks" all help towards this.
The British were known for their signature tactic of waiting silently until the last moment, firing a deadly close range volley and charging immediately with the bayonet. The result in most cases was the disastrous rout of the French battalion.
*The game models this technique by awarding a significant stress pulse jump if the attacking unit charges immediately after a close range volley.
*Of course there is nothing that prevents the French from administering the same medicine to the British. In fact there is an eyewitness account of this happening during the battle of Quatre Bras. I don't have the book handy right now but I will try to find the quote.
