Here's a definition of abatis from Definitions and Doctrine of the Military Art Past and Present by John Alger, page 88: 'Abatis were rows of felled trees from which the smaller branches had been removed, while the remaining branches had bee sharpened to a point. Abatis were employed as obstacles (objects that impede enemy movement.'
