The 'Reds' were the supporters of Valliere fils, and the 'Blues' were the supporters of Gribeauval.

Gribeauval completely transformed the French artillery arm and introduced field artillery to the French army based on his experience with the Prussian and Austrian artillery arms. There were two aspects of artillery that Gribeauval did not introduce to the French: horse artillery and a militarized artillery train. The former would have to wait for 1792 and the latter for 1800 and Napoleon's organization and introduction of the artillery train battalions.

The French artillery had blue coats under both the Vallieres and Gribeauval. It was the waistcoats and breeches that changed from red to blue during Gribeauval's overhaul of the French artillery arm.
