Re: Organization of French Line Infantry Company 1

The 1808 reorganization of the infantry battalions from nine companies to six increased the strength of each company to 140 all ranks-one captain, two lieutenants, one sergeant-major, four sergeants, one fourier, eight corporals, two drummers, and 121 privates. The company was organized into two sections, each of two escouades (squads). It should be noted that a corporal was not an NCO during this period.

This was the organization that would be in effect in 1810. And this was authorized, or full, strength. All six companies of the battalion, including the two elite companies, all had the same table of organization.

In the older, nine company organization, the grenadier companies were smaller than the others. Each grenadier company had 3 officers and 80 other ranks. The other companies, including the voltigeur companies, had 3 officers and 120 other ranks.
