I would also suggest that "high-spirited" is an attempt to tactfully characterize her single-minded determination to get back what she saw as "hers"--position, titles, wealth, being a regent for her son, and then basking in royal glory when Henri became king.

I can't imagine many folks in France--other than leftover Ultraroyalists and the duc de Polignac--wanting Charles X's grandson on the throne.
