In all honesty I was thinking yesterday that you could probably better gauge Wellington’s brilliance as a general by examining the weaknesses he had to overcome. The Duke has this strange machine like quality to his actions that when extracted from the realities of command and his own shortcomings make him seem omnipotent. If we are to see him as he was, if that is indeed something desirable, then an examination of his command flaws is necessary.
That being said I disagree utterly with the idea that Wellington’s career has gone unmentioned by critics, that is tosh, indeed most modern works strive desperately to criticise him and it has been increasingly that way since about the 70’s. Fair enough to explore this angle deeper, but this sort of ‘forgotten history newly discovered’ angle is ever draining.
