I'm sure that there are plenty of readers who like Ospreys, but I've always considered them "history lite," or akin to History Today. Sometimes reliable, sometimes not.
I'd suggest Thomas Cardoza's book, "Intrepid Women," a study of the cantinieres and vivandieres in the French Army. Also for straight-up excellent historical fiction that is free of errors and a rollicking story, read Dave McCall's The Last Campaign of Marianne Tambour."
