The author, through a detailed account of the events, describes the way the french revolutionary troops accumulated all possible blunders by lack of experience and distrust of their own officers, who led the war according to relevant Ancien Régime strategy and tactics (linear position, emphasis on defense or attack of strongholds).
But the defeated mob always rallied to fight back, thanks to a novelty: political motivation.
