"Wellington’s sole experience of war against Revolutionary France was in Holland in the winter of 1794, when he was a regimental commander in the retreat to Hamburg under the command of the Duke of York. Then, Revolutionary warfare, if such a thing existed, was in its infancy, and Wellington certainly did not experience it."

A curious statement.
