I agree in regard to the approach of most of the 'artistic' works as you observe in your reply. There were however armed and uniformed units in the opponent forces, but not many.

I am trying to locate a well researched organizational structure for these forces. It appears that they were structured based upon the religious structure of the Catholic Church: i.e. parish, bishopric, etc. There were also Presberterian units involved.
