He blames the Marshals' lack of enthusiasm on Napoleon's failure to communicate his strategy to them but surely the problem was that in 1814 Napoleon was winging it and was continually forced to change his plans and that his orders were, when not actually impossible, usually out of date when they arrived.

There is actually very little reliable information about the 'mutiny of the marshals' at Fontainbleau, much of what has been written (apart from Macdonald, who only gave his own version and Caulaincourt who didn't notice it) is second or third-hand.
