Robert,
Some of the more unusual first names may have been the mother's surname, it was common at the time for one son to carry her name on, eg Jane Austen's Mr Darcy was Fitzwilliam Darcy, his mother being Lady Anne Fitzwilliam.
Challis also lists a Leeson Patterson which I assume is the same.
