Re: French artillery at Wagram

Dear Kevin and others,

I explained it at the Viennna congress last year. After the dissastrous bavarian campain in April the French approached vienna to fast for the Authorities.
Nobody ever mentions, that the Austrian rescued over 6.000 tons of Artilleryystores in early May in convoys of 44 large river boats (we even know the Name of the shipowner and the weight of storage). This convoy moved to Komorn, Pest, Peterwardein etc.

The reason why they would or could not rescue the mentioned gun-material was that 2 large siege Trains the first for the mainarmy and the second probably for italy were assambled in Vienna as late as eraly April. The first consisted of 12x24lb, 10x18, 8x12lb guns and 10y10lb howitzers and 32 mortars of various calibres. The second consisted of 4x24 lb, 4x18 and 4x12lb guns, 6 10lb howitzers and 10 mortars.

The first part of the 1st siegetrain tried to reach the mainarmy but was too late and returend mainly on the river to vienna. So the Austrians saved those 102 of there best siege peaces and several ammunition for it. Sadly - as it was transported of to hungary on the danube it was of no use of any army in the rest of the campaign - and we know how the Austrians dearly needed heavy artillery at Wagram.....

So summing up - the Austrians seem to have been very neglactible or ignorant - but they saved over 6.000 tons of their best meterial - leaving the French the second best - which was still enough to be used - or as jack mentions partly.

Yours Michael
