Re: MILITARY FRATERNITY AND FRIENDSHIP

Dr. Martin is getting quite a bit of mileage out of his particular views of Napoleonic soldiers. I don't know whether this article pre-dates or follows his book on Napoleonic friendship, which is of course on a much larger scale that Sergeant Bourgogne. Still, it's rather amusing to read about the good sergeant's bedfellows, buddies, homeboys, etc., and the sometimes convoluted reasoning that led the author to come up with these designations.

But in what universe was Lannes ever "an impoverished orphan who attained the highest rank in the French military as a maréchal de France?" Sheeeesh!
