Hello Guys,

I am having trouble translating a word/phrase from a report from a Captain Sonnenberg of the Anhalt Battalion, which took part in a small skirmish in the Tyrol in 1809. He is describing the battalion's part in a fight near a bridge crossing a river, which was set alight by the Tyrolean insurgents, and writes the formation the battalion advanced in, but it is a term i have not come across before. I looked up the term and it is used in a number of German language military manuals in the 1760s and 1770s, and from i can tell it is either a column formation with each company behind the other--Column of Divisions(?) from memory--or perhaps even a checkerboard formation, although this seems a bit complex to use against insurgents without artillery.

The term is: "rottenmäßig (rottengleich)"
