Given that during the War between the States the guns were reportedly "buried for safety beneath the Chatham Artillery armory" in Savannah, it serms likely that only cannon tubes themselve would have been hidden in this manner and that it was when they were recovered in 1872 that they were re-mounted on the block trail carriages as we see them today.
