Hi Dave,

late reply, but yes, overall, the following happened:
- in 1807 the 5th Regiment of 3 battalions was re-named 'Zeeuwsch Legioen', which translates as 'Legion of Zeeland'. Zeeland is the province of which Walcheren is the principal island, but which also consists of Beveland, Schouwen-Duiveland and Zeeuwsch-Vlaanderen. (Incidentally, it is also the Zeeland after which New Zealand was named, just like Australia was initially called New Holland ;) ). The Zeeuwsch Legioen would also have attached to it 2 companies of foot artillery, and one of horse artillery (of which the horse artillery company would only become active in times of war), and a company of Gendarmes. All troops of the 2nd and 3rd battalions of the Legion were to be natives/locals of Zeeland, as it was considered that they would not be affected by 'Walcheren Fever' (named 'Zeeuwsche Koorts' in Dutch) as much as troops recruited elsewhere. Almost immediately after the raising of the Legion, however, the official correspondence and publications show that recruits and officers for the Legion were actually accepted from anywhere in the Netherlands if they applied. The Legion was only to serve in the Zeeland province, and not outside of it, and was a completely separate unit from the 5th regiment.
- Immediately afterwards, a new 5th Regiment of 3 battalions was raised, but that Regiment had recruiting problems, just like the rest of the army of the Kingdom of Holland. The 5th regiment still had its Depot at Middelburg on Walcheren, even though it was a separate entity from the Zeeuwsch Legioen.
- In 1808, due to overall recruiting problems, Regiments were reduced to 2 Battalions.
- By 1809, it is unclear what exactly has happened to the Zeeuwsch Legioen. The 5th Regiment, which is now a single battalion Regiment, is still on Walcheren, and in popular accounts, the 2 units are quite often identified as a single entity. During the Walcheren Expedition, the bulk of the 5th Regiment battalion is captured as POWs at Veere. A remnant retires with general Bruce to the mainland, and this remnant is later incorporated into the 7th regiment.
