Re: No 6 Coy, 23rd Foot, Waterloo, casualty statis

Sorry, I would have responded to this sooner but I got knocked off the Forum yesterday by a computer problem.

The 23rd seems to have encountered very little musketry. Artillery was the problem and they suffered from shell as one officer was seriously wounded by a 4 oz lead ball passing through his shoulder blade. This might be canister but I think it more likely to be shell.

Two of the three field officers, all of whom were mounted, were seriously wounded, one fatally. The same officer who was hit by the 4 oz ball, lost two horses in the action.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to how close the 23rd were to the Brunswick battalions and Mercer's troop during the action, a question that puzzles me. Siborne's map of Mitchel's brigade at the battle is not very clear on the movements and positions of the 23rd during the battle. They were definitely on the left or east side of the Nivelles road throughout the action.
