At the height of the expansion of the British Army there were 187 battalions of Regiments of Foot. Almost all of these had 10 companies. There were no more than six which did not, all 2nd battalions, but in every case this was a temporary reduction to 6 or 4 companies for a relatively short period.
Battalions (1st or 2nd) with the Field Army were normally established as 1,000 or 1,200 R&F, static garrisons were normally 800, and home defence 2nd battalions were normally 400 or a few of 600. In almost every case they had 10 companies, the different sizes being achieved by companies of 40, 60, 80, 100 or 120 respectively.
