I believe that both you and H-K are both right and wrong
Handpferde are horses brought along by the bridle "mitgefuehrte pferde". It refers to the riding horses without riders, such as officers horses, estafette horses, and so on that were kept in the rear with the gear,(because they were too expensive to be blown apart on the battlefield).
