Re: Portugal - 1809 (Lecor)
In Response To: Portugal - 1809 ()

Hi,

Regarding Lecor's Command in Beira Baixa, there was a combination of what Moisés said; Castelo Branco was very scarsely populated and far from the economical importance of other axes. Junot had however invaded through there in 1807 and in the map it surely looked the quickest way to Lisbon (if you rule out the several mountain chains and the Zezere). The French learnt that lesson well and the area would only be attacked in 1812, and even so not seriously (despite the threat being considered, as Beresford instructions are clear before April 12, 1812), Only later did its value as a halfway between the two major entries (Elvas - Almeida) became pressing.
The second element was that Lecor worked there in 1801 under Alorna and (later) Dordaz. Also in 1801, there was no action in Beira Baixa, but only in Alentejo and Trás-os-Montes. Nevertheless, for some months he worked there and surely knew most of the officials and the local elite. That should have smoothed things a bit.

In a letter dating March 3, 1809, one month into his command, Lecor states that there is a general feeling in Beira baixa that the enemy would not invade the province again, indicating that 'patriotism develops very little in this hamlets'. Of course this is just before the 2nd invasion, but it might helps us understand the nature of the population in this area.

I just wonder what would happen to a french-descendant superior officer in Minho...
