I don't know whether it would be of any interest, but I was giving a lecture on medical services at the Battle of Waterloo in Norwich 11 years ago, when, after the talk, an elderly GP came up and spoke to me about Elizabeth Watkins.
He later sent me a letter about her (a relative of Elizabeth's had been his patient) - also a photograph of her, holding a folded handkerchief, which she used to dip into her teacup and suck! The GP thought that this behaviour might have reflected her activities as a child, when, as a 5 or 6-year old, she had scraped lint and dripped water from a handkerchief into the mouths of the parched wounded men on the field, following.
If anyone would like to see a photograph of Elizabeth, please contact me - <mickcrumplin@doctors.org.uk>
