skarpiren, eskarpiren (c may be replaced with k, and i with ie, e.g. escarpieren, and other variants) - derived from French: escarpe = (engl.) scarp
Basically, it means (in German), to create a steep earthen slope of an embankment, or of the scarp of a field fortification (see link below).
I don't know its meaning in connection with artillery fire.
