Only part (two squadrons) of the Berg Chevauleger Regiment was sent to Spain in 1808. The detachment was initially commanded by Major Count de Nesselrode-Reichenstein, but he went off with Murat at Bayonne before the unit entered the Peninsula. The remnants of the force may have been commanded by Captain La Nougarede, the commander of the elite company, before they were incorporated into various cavalry units of the Imperial Guard by a decree dated January 11, 1809.
