Part of Trinidad inhabitant certainly did appreciate Picton's firmness, including torture of delinquent - something that was rather backward by english standard of the period, or Picton would not have been put into trial at all.

But torturing a young woman could hardly "avoid bloodshed". No rebellious or subversive behaviour was involved in this affair.
