Development of field artillery in the XVIII Centur

I am laboriously wading through de Valiere`s defence of the old, heavy, long barrelled guns against the heretical short-barrelled, lighter pieces `a la Suedois`.
Apart from multiple sneers at the new weapons, he seems to be relying on old technology (Robins, Monocuculi), he seems to have completey missed the massive advantages of the newer guns - it`s like reading a justification of the flat-earthers.
I there an English or German work explaining the scientific development of ballistics during this period?
