Trobriand did not
know that one of Bernadotte's divisions was still
struggling through the Dornburg defile, and another
was out of reach behind and beyond. His opinion that
Bernadotte should have started in pursuit is of no
value. Neither Napoleon nor Berthier nor any other
competent critic has ever said that he should have
pursued the enemy, with one division, and such cavalry
as was at his disposal.
After his arrival at Appolda, Bernadotte at 4 p.m.
